I was looking for a nice gift for my wife who is careful to buy things that are "safe" for the family. I saw this Olvida 10 inch Nickle Plated Cast Iron Skillet and was hoping to get a "safe" non-stick pan that would be tough and not need any pre-treating. Well, I used this pan once with some oil for flavor and was impressed, but that was the last time it was non stick. I really wonder about the coating... it leaves a gray color on the cloths used to clean it. Stick with the cast iron and the seasoning it requires.

I should have believed the other reviews, but I had hoped mine would be different. No such luck. After washing the pan, I heated it on the stove to thoroughly dry it before lightly oiling it ( as suggested in the manual) and putting it away. Even though I had carefully dried the pan with a dish towel, when put the pan on the heat water/steam started bubbling up from a pit in the nickel, discoloring the area around the pit and decreasing my confidence in the pan's overall longevity and quality. I guess I could return it, bit I'm not optimistic the next one would be any better. Lesson learned -- listen to other reviewers. Maybe it won't be a problem longterm?

Some years ago we purchased a Olvida grill pan. It is heavy duty and has served us very well. Based on this experience I bought my wife a 5.8 quart pot with lid and a 10" frypan for around $300. A large outlay for us but we have always used cast iron and the nickel plating would be great for cleaning.
The boxes arrived and so the disappointment. The castings are light weight and of incredibly poor quality. Neither pan has a flat bottom, the lid rocks on the top of the pot about 3/16" with no prospect of sealing. This product looks like a kindergarten project next to the quality of the 100 year old cast iron we have. The plating has pin holes in the surface in the insides of the pans. Some are large enough to clearly see the cast iron underneath. So much for the dishwasher. The large pot has spots as large as a pea that are unplated on the outside and grey blemishes in the plating that is there.
This is by far the most expensive junk I have ever purchased. If this is truly US made, it is no wonder our economy is in the toilet.
The only saving grace is that Amazon takes returns for a full refund.
