We already own a Keurig machine and an expresso machine. While I use the Keurig often, the expresso machine hardly gets used due to the time it takes to make one and clean up everything afterwards.

That's why I bought this machine for quick expressos and quick capucinos. Overall I am impressed, it makes a decent expresso and capucino very quickly and it does not take much counter space. Also the machine seems fairly sturdy.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because it's completely manual. You have to turn on the water and turn it off at the correct time, which means you have to know exactly how much your cup holds because you need to pour the correct amount of water otherwise it's too diluted.

Alteratively, and what I do, is to simply eyeball the stream coming out and stopping when you can see it change color.

Otherwise it's good as a second machine, but due to the limitations in flavors of coffee I would not buy this as my sole coffee maker.

Update: May 25th, 2011.

If you are buying this machine primarily for cappuccinos then this advice will really help you out. Don't buy the cappuccino pods for the following reasons:

1. You only get 8 cappuccinos per box instead of 16 (you get 8 milk pods and 8 expresso pods)
2. The milk powder is mixed with sugar and some other artificial ingredients.
3. The expresso amount you get is only 2 oz.

This is what I have done and the results are amazing, and cleanup is really easy.

Buy the Lungo pods, which are basically double expresso shots, ie 4 oz. Then buy one of these milk frothers Aerolatte 5 Milk Frother, Satin Finish or similar, there are other brands but this brand is very good.

All you do is fill about a third of your cup with milk, microwave it for about a minute but be careful not to overheat it. Then use the milk frother to froth the milk in the cup.

Then insert your lungo pod and brew the expresso right into your cup where it will sink under the foam.

That will create a really excellent cappucino with 4oz of expresso, real milk, and no sugar or additives. Best part is that the cost is now halved because you can make 16 instead of 8.

I'm really happy with this solution because the cappuccinos are excellent and cleanup is really quick. There are just two things that need a quick rinse, the pod holder and the shaft of the milk frother.

This wasn't the machine I wanted to buy. I initially wanted a Tassimo because the Keurig doesn't brew espresso drinks. I was disappointed to find out that Tassimo has stopped selling Starbucks espresso pods as I don't think that the Gevalia makes good quality drinks. I decided to pick up a Dolce Gusto to try out a different brand that does offer espresso beverages. There weren't many reviews to read, so it was a bit of a gamble, but I was purchasing for my office so I wouldn't be stuck with the bill if it didn't work out. ;-)

I planned on getting the larger model, with a bigger water reservoir, but I needed one ASAP so I bought the only model they had at a local grocery store - the Piccolo. It was only $89 locally. The small water reservoir is way too small for any office. This is just going in our conference room for when we have visitors, but you can only get 2 drinks out of it before you need to refill.

I've used Tassimo and Keurig before and I assumed that this would function similarly to a Tassimo. You put in one pod and brew the espresso, then put in another pod and steam the milk. WRONG. There is WAY too much room for human error to affect drink quality with this brand of machine. The lever that lets you control the strength of your drink is a nice idea in theory, but will likely result in poor tasting drinks for most users. The instructions tell you how many ounces you should brew for different drinks, but in my experience people are not very good at judging what 3 ounces or 7 ounces of liquid looks like, so I assume that most espresso would be over extracted and most milk will end up watered down.

This machine would be great if you pushed a button and it brewed exactly the amount that it is supposed to. Making the customer have to judge when to shut off the brewer is just poor design, in my opinion. You also feel like you're "wasting" product if you shut it off too early - it leaves you guessing if you brewed it long enough.

The drink quality was fine - not great. I'm switching back to Tassimo. The machines are excellent even if the drink selection offered by Tassimo is subpar. I'm hoping they will get with the game and start offering new suppliers in wake of the increasing competition in this market.

This little machine can do a LOT. At first, I was worried because of some of the bad reviews on this machine, but I am pleased with the performance and quality of the drinks that this thing makes. No, you can't use your own coffee in this coffee maker, which is a bit of a let down I will say that. BUT, Nescafe makes a "house brew" coffee capsule which is kinda like Foldgers breakfast blend. A lot of the capsules available for this machine are "specialty" coffees, and (doing the math) cost about $2 for a 16oz drink; that is, using two capsules for one drink instead of one. (The capsules only make about an 8oz drink). All in all this is a good gift for a college kid, or someone who is definitely not a coffee snob :) perfect for someone with limited time (coffee takes literally 30 seconds to brew!). I love this thing :)
